  • Learning how to host a startup pitch event2019-07-29 16:47:21

On Thursday, July 18, 2019, DOHE Philippines team members attended a “Pitch Party” hosted by The Company Cebu, a co-working space at the Cebu IT Park. Startups all over Cebu were invited to pitch their products to a panel of five (5) investor-judges with the goal of receiving seed funding. We were there to observe and learn about the process of hosting a pitching event because of our plans to host something very similar later this year.

The investor-judges were led by Mark Vernon (founder of Tagcash, iPlotz, VTC.com, etc.), a serial entrepreneur and Silicon Valley veteran, now the Vice Chairman of the FinTech Philippines Association. Joining him were Bryan Yap (founder/CEO of the Republiq Group of Companies), Dave Overton (founder/CEO of Symph), Andrew Hager (VP of Engineering at CoInspect), and Ken Ngo (managing partner of Core Capital).

During the event, a total of 15 Cebuano startups presented their ideas to the panel. The most common products pitched were online games and booking apps, but some of the more unique ones were solar-powered light bulbs for the poor, an app designed to prevent excessive gaming, and even a boutique spice shop. Ultimately, no direct funding was announced, but the investor-judges were happy about the large turnout and promised to hold more activities like these in the future.

As the DOHE Group builds its own startup accelerator, events like these are a great opportunity to learn more about the venture capital industry and about startup culture in general. Attending startup events also help us network with members of the Cebuano (and even international) startup community and increase DOHE’s public visibility before our accelerator is fully established. We are on the lookout for these kinds of opportunities and will definitely attend as many as we can.
